United States Patent Applications in process

Comments by owner, Mr. Jim Moseley:

I've been using the system for over two years with nothing but success
Interview in Peoria, IL Journal Star, June 13, 2000

Regulations are moving in that direction, soon everybody will
have to have (the) technology, I was just trying to stay ahead
of the curve. I don't like having problems with neighbors
or officials....
Statement on Iowa Public TV Program Market to Market, 2000

Closed Circuit Odor and Waste Management System
Installed at Infinity Pork in 1998

Site description:

The location is approximately 2.5 miles southeast of Clarks Hill, Indiana.

On less than five (5) acres, there are sixteen (16) barns, each with 850 animals, total 13,600.

Barns are recharge pit, with nine inches (9”) of water. Flushing releases an estimated 50,000 gallons of slurry, containing approximately 5.5% solids.

Presently three (3) barns are flushed daily.

There is no lagoon.

There is no sprayfield.

Due to Indiana Department of Environmental Management not thoroughly understanding the technology, an unnecessary open concrete tank exists, which compromises the Closed Circuit concept. Certain adaptations had to be made; performance is less efficient than if the Closed Circuit design had not been compromised.

System description:

One (1) Separator rated at 125 gpm.

Energy use: 220 VAC, single phase, 15 Amp operating. Total Watts, 4,400

Two pumps rated @ 125 gpm.

Energy use: 220 VAC, single phase, 17.5 Amp operating, each. Total Watts, 7,700

Two (2) Ozone generators.

Energy use: 110 VAC, single phase, 3 Amps operating, each. Total Watts 660.One injects 1.036 grams of Ozone @ 4cfm, 40 psi. The other injects .986 grams of Ozone @ 1 cfm, 100 psi into separated liquids, which are used for flushwater.

One (1) Pressure pump to inject Ozone

Energy use 110 VAC, single phase, 12 Amps start, 6 Amps run. Watts  660.

Total wattage: 13,420. kWh use in 12 hours: 161.040.

Liquid recycled:

Approximately 92.5% of liquids are recycled which is returned to barns for use as flushwater. Later, some will be filtered, removing particulate matter to 0.5 microns, and used for feedwater. When this step is taken, it is estimated that less than five percent (5%) of total water needs will be drawn from wells.

Solids produced:

Separated solids stack and are odor-free.

Moisture content of 65% +/- is maintained. This can be varied with a one-valve adjustment of Separator flow.

Solids may be used immediately on crops. All nutrients are available. Ozonation breaks ammonia into its components of nitrate and water, nitrogen levels are somewhat enhanced. Phosphorus levels are slightly decreased. Hydrogen sulfide is totally eliminated.

Neighbors, farmers and family gardeners, are requesting solids for their use.

Odor levels reduced:

Separated liquids and solids are, essentially, odor-free.

Barn odors have decreased.

Liquids returned to barns are ozonated and revert to highly oxygenated liquid in 20 minutes, or less, inhibiting production of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide.

Pathogens removed:

Due to the difficulty in reaching an agreement with an independent laboratory capable of making complete tests for pathogens, only basic sampling has been done. Pathogens were not detectable in liquids and solids.

Costs:

Costs include equipment installation and energy use and are based on flushing three barns daily, amortized over a three-year period:

$0.00091 per gallon of wastewater processed.

Per Animal Costs:

Taking the amount paid ERAC for this installation and dividing the number of animals that will be processed at the site over three (3) years, the length of time ERAC guarantees all work and equipment, and adding energy costs at 0.06 per kWh, the per animal cost is: $0.621 per animal.

Per animal costs for other installations may be more or less than this amount.

Other benefits:

Other benefits, as stated by the owner, include:

1:          Easily transported solids. One field is approximately nine miles from the site.
Instead of transporting 10,000 gallons of liquid and injecting into the soil, solids are trucked to the site.

A substantial savings in labor and time.

2:          Mortalities are composted, under low odor conditions, using a mixture of sawdust and solids.

3:          Barn floors are cleaner. A small amount of ozone is released by the flushwater
inhibiting production of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. Results in a cleaner environment for animals and workers.

4:          Barn odors have decreased noticeably.

5:          If a lagoon and irrigation were used, only four (4) barns would have been allowed.

6:          Addition of any carbon-based matter will enhance composting. At the end of the growing season may be spread on fields – or may be spread on fields as side dressing.

7:          All plant and soil nutrients contained in hog manure remain in solids.

Summary:

1:  No lagoon or irrigation system.

2:  92.5% of liquids are recycled.

3:  Separated solids stack coming off conveyor.

4:  Separated solids and liquids are essentially odor-free.

5:  Total costs for this installation, amortized over a three-year period:
$0.00091 per gallon of wastewater processed.
                        Per animal costs $0.291

The owner of the site was appointed Deputy Director, USDA.

The System ran continuously for over three years with no interruptions due to equipment malfunction or failure.

Unfortunately, after Mr. Moseley was appointed Deputy Director, USDA, his new farm manager ended all visits, a violation of our verbal agreement with Mr. Moseley, and caused the technology to be disabled. No explanation was given. Ozone Generators built and  installed by ERAC-USA LLC have been removed.
